SA: Zimbabwean truck abandons bail; charged with smuggling explosives

By SABC News

A Zimbabwean truck driver accused of smuggling explosives into South Africa (SA) has abandoned his bail application in the Musina magistrate’s court in Limpopo Province.

The accused, Edgar Maroto, will appear in court again on Thursday next week.

The state was able to prove that Maroto provided false information about his residential address to the court.

Maroto was arrested at Beitbridge Border Post after a consignment of explosives and detonators worth a million rand, were discovered on a trailer of a truck that he was driving.

The prosecution informed the court that Maroto was dishonest when providing specific information such as his address as well as the fact that he was previously fired by the truck company.

Maroto’s defense had requested for a postponement on Monday, in order to establish his residential address.

The accused also attempted to flee from arrest after a cache of explosives were discovered.
He will remain in custody.

The case will now be heard on April 30, for a regional court date.
