Former ZBC reporter appointed new CEO for public broadcaster

THE Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) has appointed a substantive chief executive officer, picking its former reporter Sugar Chagonda for the role.

The Corporation confirmed the development in a statement issued Monday.

Chagonda takes over more than a year after the resignation of Adelaide Chikunguru who resigned in March 2024, amonth after being suspended by the Board.

Commenting on Chagonda’s appointment, ZBC board chair, Helliate Rushwaya, said “While we’ve made progress in terms of refurbishing our studios here at Pockets and Montrose studios there’s still much work to be done.

“With our current team in place we’re poised to focus on producing high -quality television content that showcases the Zimbabwean story. Historically, the ZBC has lagged behind in terms of telling the Zimbabwean story.”

She added; “We’re committed to telling the Zimbabwean story and changing the negative narrative about Zimbabwe. We’ll also prioritize elevating our news news bulletins to meet international standards in terms of aestatistics and delivery.

“I’m confident that our capable team will soon bring about noticeable changes on our screens.”

Chagonda was a reporter at the ZBC from 2004 before leaving to join the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority in (ZTA) in 2009 where he worked as head of corporate affairs.

In 2018, he joined the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC), as Corporate Affairs Executive until his latest appointment has head of the ZBC.

Chagonda holds a degree in social studies from the University of Zimbabwe and a Masters Degree in Public Policy and Governance from Africa University. He also holds an Executive MBA from Midlands State University.
