SCOTLAND: Cowdenbeath Rotary Club is set to begin its project to provide a Zimbabwean community with a water supply.

The club announced at a meeting on Thursday that they had raised the £2,000 needed to provide water for Arcadia, a community near Harare.

The project was initiated after club president Hank John met a local clergyman from Arcadia at an event in Buckhaven.

The clergyman informed Mr John that a well and supply mechanism costing £2,000 was desperately needed to help the community, as drought continued to affect the area.

The club was made aware that contaminated groundwater was a major issue, leading to diseases.

The Rotary Club members therefore decided to commit to a project that could significantly improve daily life for the Arcadia residents.

Mr John said: “Thanks to the £1,200 grant we received from Rotary District 1010, and the generous contributions from the public at events held around Christmas time, we now have the £2,000 ready to go to Zimbabwe.”

He explained that the project would involve digging a 40-foot well, fitting pipework, and installing a solar panel-operated electric pump.

Mr John added: “We hope that the project will start within days with the community being able to enjoy the benefits of having a reliable water supply within a month.”

“It will not only be the people of Arcadia who will be able to tap into the water supply, but also the small farms around the community which badly suffer from the drought conditions that exist there.”
