MUSINA: A 38-year-old Zimbabwean bus driver has been arrested after being caught smuggling 76 undocumented Zimbabwean nationals into South Africa, in a case that has raised fresh concerns about illegal immigration at the country’s northern borders.
The arrest took place on Monday, June 30, 2025, during a joint operation conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Border Policing Unit and SANPARKS Rangers.
The driver was intercepted along the R572 road near Dongola Ranch, following a high-speed chase after he ignored police instructions to stop on the R521 near Pontdrift.
Upon stopping the Zimbabwean-registered bus, authorities discovered 76 passengers, none of whom had valid passports or travel documentation.
The driver was formally charged with conveying illegal immigrants.
The bus, along with the undocumented passengers, was escorted to the Beitbridge Port of Entry, where the Border Management Authority (BMA) took over processing and deportation procedures.
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Limpopo’s Provincial Commissioner of Police, commended the swift response and praised the coordinated efforts between SAPS and SANPARKS.
“This swift, coordinated action underscores our commitment to securing our borders,” she said, adding that such operations are crucial in deterring those who attempt to flout South Africa’s immigration laws.
The incident is the latest in a string of enforcement efforts aimed at curbing illegal cross-border movement between South Africa and its northern neighbour, Zimbabwe.
Authorities say they remain on high alert and are increasing patrols and roadblocks in key smuggling hotspots across Limpopo.
Police have urged transport operators and border communities to report any suspicious activity as the crackdown on undocumented migration continues.
