INDIA: Zimbabwean boy with autism shows remarkable recovery at Mumbai hospital

INDIA: A 7-year-old boy from Zimbabwe diagnosed with autism and developmental delay has reportedly shown significant improvement after undergoing personalised cell-based therapy at StemRx Hospital & Research Centre, Navi Mumbai.
Under the care of Dr. Pradeep Mahajan, Regenerative Medicine Researcher and Founder of StemRx, Shawn Apuwanashe’s journey reflects the potential of regenerative medicine in treating complex neurodevelopmental conditions.
Prior to arriving in India, Shawn had received no formal medical intervention for his condition. Struggling with communication, social engagement, and basic daily tasks, his parents sought innovative care and travelled to StemRx in the hope of a breakthrough.
Said Dr. Mahajan, “Shawn underwent a comprehensive evaluation before starting treatment.
“His personalised plan included stem cell therapy, neuro-rehabilitation, occupational therapy, sensory integration, behavioural therapy, and nutritional support.
“These therapies work together to enhance neurological function and help children with autism reach their full potential.”
Within weeks of treatment, small but meaningful improvements were evident. Shawn began responding better, focusing more attentively, and finding new ways to communicate. Milestones such as drinking through a straw and sitting calmly for a haircut marked significant steps in his development.
“Our approach is holistic and tailored,” added Dr. Mahajan.
“The aim is to repair neurological pathways while simultaneously strengthening motor, sensory, and communication skills. Nutritional interventions also play a vital role in supporting brain function.”
Shawn’s mother expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying: “When we brought Shawn here, we didn’t know what to expect.
“But the transformation has been nothing short of a miracle. Watching him interact, express, and attempt tasks he never could before has restored our hope.”
Now preparing to return to Zimbabwe, Shawn looks forward to rejoining school and reconnecting with friends, an outcome once thought distant. His story shines as an inspiring example of how early intervention, advanced therapies, and compassionate care can open new doors for children with autism.
