CANADA: A fundraiser supporting South Surrey-led projects in Zimbabwe is returning to White Rock Baptist Church on Oct. 17 – and quite likely, for the last time.

Set for 8:30 a.m. till 3 p.m., the Zimbabwe Gecko Society event, held annually since 2010, will feature the sale of African arts and crafts – including paintings, beaded ornaments, chutneys and more – as well as a mini garage sale, raffles and refreshments.

The society, founded in 2008, strives to help those struggling with crippling poverty in Zimbabwe. Over the years, it has donated goods, expertise and volunteers – both in Zimbabwe and on the Semiahmoo Peninsula – to help improve the health, education and self-sufficiency of those who live there.

All proceeds from the Oct. 17 event will benefit the society’s ongoing efforts. It typically raises around $12,000.

Society founder Sue Janetti noted this isn’t the first time that she and husband Frank have considered bringing an end to the sale events.

“Every year is a decision,” she said Friday (Oct. 2).

Numerous works of art will be among items up for sale at the Oct. 17, 2026 arts, crafts and garage sale benefitting the South Surrey-based Zimbabwe Gecko Society.

While both are still active on the ground in Zimbabwe – including earlier this year – “carrying all the boxes from upstairs is getting a bit wearing,” Janetti said, noting Frank is 84 and she is 78.

Visiting with everyone who helps or attends the sale has been a highlight, she said.

In addition to those who come to pick up pre-ordered pies and quiches made by Janetti, people “come for the art, some come for the speciality knitted items. Some for the crafts for unique Christmas gifts.

Some for the cake and tea. Some just to play the wine board or gift baskets and some just to socialize. The early morning folk come for the garage sale. Some just make a donation to the society.

“It has been great meeting the community.”

Janetti hopes to have a book of stories she’s penned about experiences whilst working in Zimbabwe also among items available for sale.

“True stories that will make you cry and also make you laugh… stories of faith, trust, funny and not so funny,” she writes in a summer newsletter.

For those with items to donate for the garage sale (no furniture or other large items), they will be accepted at the church (1657 140 St.) from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16.
