Cobert Chimedza Junior, a skilled 20-year-old talent from Zimbabwe, has officially signed a multi-year contract with Gil Vicente, a prominent club in the Portuguese top division.
This development signifies a remarkable milestone for Chimedza, who began his journey in Harare before moving to the United Kingdom at just 14 years old.
Chimedza’s remarkable talent was on full display during his time at MK Dons, where he netted an impressive 18 goals in merely 15 appearances in the English League 2.
Recognized for his potential by the coaching staff of the Zimbabwe national team, he was even given the opportunity to train with the team during the tenure of coach Zdravko Logarusic back in 2021.
Notably, Warriors’ legends Knowledge Musona and Ovidy Karuru, who served as captain and vice-captain respectively, praised Chimedza, dubbing him as “one for the future.”
This achievement is monumental, as he stands tall as the first Zimbabwean to sign with a club in the Portuguese top division since the nation gained independence.
Chimedza pays homage to the late Freddy Mukwesha, who made history by playing for Sporting Braga back in 1960.
Earlier this year, Chimedza was poised to make a move to Turkish club Adana Demirspor, but the transfer collapsed following the abrupt exit of head coach Patrick Kluivert.
As for Gil Vicente, currently under the guidance of coach César Peixoto, the team is striving for improvement, presently sitting at 14th place on the league table, amassing 26 points from 27 matches.
