US: Drexel University’s Nyamukondiwa to represent Zimbabwe at world championships

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel University senior Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa will represent his native country of Zimbabwe at the upcoming 2013 World Amateur Team Championships in Abu Dhabi. The 33rd Eisenhower Trophy will be awarded to the winner of the tournament, which will be played from October 18-21 at the National Course at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

The Emirates Golf Federation is the host of the event, which takes place every two years.

The World Amateur Team Championships include 72 holes of stroke play competition. Each country fields two or three players with the two lowest scores counting per round. Nyamukondiwa will tee off at 6:41 a.m. local time (2:41 p.m. EST) time on the 18th.

He will be paired with Thomas Nesbitt of the United Arab Emirates and Findland’s Jesse Saareks. The field has four of the top five ranked amateurs in the world, including Nick Dunlap (Alabama), David Ford (UNC) and Gordon Sargent (Vanderbilt) from the United States.

The World Amateur Team Championships, which also includes the Espirito Santo Trophy for the women’s championship, are a biennial international amateur golf competition conducted by the International Golf Federation. The championships will be held in the Middle East for the first time since their inauguration in 1958.

The championships have historically brought together some of the top amateur players around the world. Some of the men who have participated in the WATC include Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods of the United States, Colin Montgomerie of Great Britain, Sergio Garcia of Spain and Rory McIlroy of Ireland.
