UK: New setback for Plymouth’s Zim defender Brendan Galloway

Steven Schumacher has revealed how another injury setback for Plymouth Argyle defender Brendan Galloway has further delayed his return to action.

The Zimbabwe international has had to deal with several fitness issues since joining the Pilgrims in the summer of 2021 and he missed the end of last season due to a hamstring injury which required surgery.

Galloway continued his rehabilitation throughout pre-season as he and another Pilgrims’ defender, Macaulay Gillesphey, recovered from operations. At one stage, Schumacher thought Galloway would be back in contention before Gillesphey but that has not turned out to be the case.

Gillesphey has still yet to play for Argyle this season but was a substitute for the Carabao Cup second round tie against Crystal Palace at Home Park on August 29 and also the 4-1 Championship defeat away to Bristol City on Tuesday. As for Galloway, there is no timeline on when he could be available for selection.

“He had to go and get some other advice. There was a bit of inflammation around one of his tendons – the tendon that he tore – so he has had to have an injection to settle that down.

“It then takes a bit of time for that to recover. He has had his second and final injection now so the plan will be for him to start building up on the grass again this week.”

Galloway has played only six games since last December, which were all between February and April earlier this year, with the last one coming in the 2-1 away League One win against Shrewsbury Town on April 18.

Schumacher added: “He has just got to build himself up. He wasn’t far away from being in contention in the squad. He probably had two or three weeks training with us and we were planning on getting him a behind-closed-doors game but that didn’t happen.”
