Two people killed in explosives blast at Kwekwe mine

Two men died in an explosives blast in Kwekwe, the Midlands province, when nine heated dynamites blew up on Saturday, the police have confirmed.

In a statement, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the incident occurred on Wednesday last week at Donzic 6 Mine, following an explosion in a room the two men were occupying.

The deceased were identified as Loveson Nkiwane (41) and Albert Mulima (36) died,

“Preliminary investigations show that one of the victims had unknowingly placed a hot iron pick head underground, directly onto a hidden cache of the explosives,” said Comm Nyathi.

“Subsequently, the heat from the pick head ignited the dynamites, causing a devastating explosion which claimed the lives of the victims.”

Meanwhile the police are appealing for information which may lead to the arrest of Kenias Mapfumo, Armstrong Marumahoko and Mathias Tatenda Dhlamini in connection with a case of murder which occurred on March 13 at Mushange Business Centre, Zhombe in which Shepherd Mavhangira (45) died.

Comm Nyathi said the suspects allegedly hit the victim with bricks on the forehead, thigh and left bicep and he died on the spot. The victim had tried to refrain the suspects from throwing bricks at patrons who were drinking beer at a bar.
