Tsvangirai’s widow meets Kenya’s Speaker of Parliament: What was discussed?

Kenya’s National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula recently held a meeting with Elizabeth  Macheka, the widow of Zimbabwe’s late Prime Minister and opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, at Parliament Buildings in Nairobi.

Chengeta was in Kenya for the funeral of the late Raila Odinga.

In a statement on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Wetang’ula revealed that they reflected on the enduring friendship that once bound two iconic African statesmen who shared a deep commitment to democracy, justice, and good governance across the continent.

Wetang’ula noted that the meeting was not only a gesture of solidarity between Kenya and Zimbabwe but also a celebration of the shared legacy of the two men, whose struggles for freedom and democratic reforms shaped Africa’s political landscape.

“Together, we reflected on the enduring friendship and solidarity that once bound two towering African statesmen. We celebrated their shared legacy of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to democracy,” Wetang’ula said.

“She expressed her heartfelt sympathies to the people of Kenya and wished the nation strength and peace as we continue to come to terms with the sudden passing of one of Africa’s greatest sons,” the statement added.

During her visit, Tsvangirai signed the condolence book at Parliament, expressing sympathy to the Odinga family and the people of Kenya.

“I felt deeply honoured to sign the Visitors’ Book in remembrance of Baba Raila Odinga. His legacy of courage, justice, and unity will continue to inspire generations. In honouring me today, you also honoured my late husband, Dr Morgan R. Tsvangirai, and the people of Zimbabwe,” she said.

She thanked Kenyans for their warmth and hospitality during her stay, adding, “Asante Kenya kwa makaribisho ya upendo. Mungu awafariji.”

The meeting came days after Ms. Tsvangirai attended the burial of her late husband’s long-time ally and friend, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, in Bondo, Siaya County.

She joined thousands of mourners in paying tribute to the late leader, whom she described as “a true patriot and servant of the people.”
