SOUTH AFRICA: A multi-disciplinary team in the Northern Cape executed a crackdown on illegal mining in Kleinzee, Namakwa District, resulting in the arrest of six Zimbabwean nationals.
According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam, the suspects, all male and aged between 20 and 43, were apprehended for engaging in illicit mining activities on June 25.
The Operation Vala Umgodi team, comprised of members from the South African Police Service (SAPS), the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the Department of Home Affairs, had been conducting observation duties around mining areas in Kleinzee. Their vigilance paid off when they spotted the men allegedly involved in illegal mining.
During the operation, various mining equipment was confiscated, including a generator, jackhammer, electric extension cord, and bags containing suspected diamond-bearing gravel.
The suspects are now awaiting their court appearance at the Port Nolloth Magistrate’s Court.
Sam encouraged community members to remain vigilant and to report any illegal mining activities to the SAPS.
“If you see something, say something,” urged Sam.
