LONDON: Zimbabwe Warriors to face Nigeria as Unity Cup returns

By Sports Reporter

LONDON: THE Unity Cup, described as the premier international football tournament celebrating AfroCentric and global diaspora communities, returns in May with Zimbabwe’s Warriors among the contestants.

Running from 26 to 30 May 2026 and hosted by The Valley, home to Charlton Athletic FC, the revamped four-nation tournament features defending champions Nigeria as well as Jamaica and India.

Following the “massive success” of the 2025 edition, which saw Nigeria crowned champions at Brentford, the 2026 tournament marks a sentimental return to South London.

The Unity Cup was famously hosted at The Valley in 2004, a landmark event involving Nigeria, Jamaica and The Republic of Ireland that solidified the competition’s reputation for blending elite sport with cultural celebration.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) confirmed the Warriors’ participation, describing the tournament as “a significant moment for Zimbabwe football”.

“The Unity Cup is a landmark moment for Zimbabwe football. It reflects our ambition to compete, grow and test ourselves at a high international level,” said ZIFA president Nobile Magwizi.

Head Coach Marian Marinica welcomed the opportunity for the team. “This is a strong platform for us as a team and an important chance to represent Zimbabwe with pride on an international stage.”

Warriors Captain Marvelous Nakamba said the squad was ready for the challenge. “It is always an honour to represent Zimbabwe, and playing in London in front of our supporters in the diaspora makes this occasion even more special.”

The tournament will kick-off with a high-stakes semi-final clash between Zimbabwe and Nigeria which serves as a massive rematch following their intense 2025 CAF World Cup Qualifying encounters.

With the memories of those hard-fought qualifiers still fresh, the Super Eagles and the Warriors will look to settle the score on neutral ground.

Meanwhile Charlton Athletic FC Vice-Chairman, Paul Elliott, said: “I’m delighted to be supporting such a prestigious tournament with diversity and inclusion really at the heart of its delivery.  The participating countries are all so representative of our unique local demographic here in South East London.”

Organisers AfroSport added: “The Unity Cup is back again, promising to deliver an event unlike any other.

“Those who attended last year will know that this is more than a football match but a joyous occasion that brings people together over three days in a celebration of culture, rivalry, friendship and respect.”

The 2026 Unity Cup fixtures are as follows:

Tuesday May 26th (KO 7.30pm BST): Nigeria v Zimbabwe

Semi-Final Two

Wednesday, May 27th (KO 7.30pm BST): Jamaica v India
