INTERVEW: Zimbabwean/Irish soul singer drops new single

Zimbabwean/Irish soul singer shiv has released her new single, Late Now. We asked her the BIG questions . . .

shiv has been releasing music independently since 2019, with her debut single Here followed by Over, You and IHold MeGolden, and Letting You Know.

Late Now is her first release with Warner Music Ireland and she wrote it while she was living in Paris with a production duo called Superparka.

‘”I tried my best to portray a feeling of frustration and chaos through the lyrics and ensured that was a key part of the production,” she says.

“It’s really exciting to show people a different side to me, show that I’m not bound to a specific genre/mood and begin to grow as an artist both thematically and musically.”

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I have a degree in psychology, I’ve been a vegetarian since I was nine, and I’m double-jointed in my shoulders.

How would you describe your music?

Emotion-filled escapism.

Who are your musical inspirations?

It varies but mainly Frank Ocean, Erykah Badu, Beyoncé, Curtis Mayfield, Mychelle and Cleo Sol. There’s a lot of inspiring stuff coming out of Ireland at the moment too, Negro Impacto, everything on Chamomile Records, Sello.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Kate Nash in the Olympia with my sister.

What was the first record you ever bought?

My dad gave me a Capital Letters record and that was the first of my collection. Blond by Frank Ocean was the first record I bought myself.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Unloyal by Summer Walker and Ari Lennox.

Favourite lyric of all time?

“I’m sure we’re taller in another dimension. You say we’re small and not worth the mention.”

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Outstanding – Gap Band.
