INDIA: Bathinda police have registered a case against four persons, including a security guard of Guru Kashi University, in connection with a violent assault on Zimbabwean student Ziweya Leeroy.

The 22-year-old, who is pursuing a BSc in Radiology and Imaging Technology (RIT) and joined the university in 2023, is currently in critical condition at AIIMS Bathinda hospital.

Charges filed against the four include attempted murder and rioting committed with a deadly weapon.

The accused have been identified as security guard Dilpreet Singh, Lovepreet Singh, Mangu Singh, and Manpreet Singh.

According to the complaint, initial investigations revealed that Leeroy had an altercation with Dilpreet Singh on Aug 12.

The following day, when Leeroy stepped out of the university campus in the late afternoon, he was ambushed by the four accused.

They allegedly attacked him with baseball bats, sticks, and sharp-edged weapons before fleeing the scene.

Bathinda senior police superintendent (SSP) Amneet Kondal confirmed that one of the accused, Mangu Singh, has been arrested.

“We are in the process of registering an FIR under attempt to murder charges,” Kondal stated.

She added that the police were alerted to the attack around 4 pm and that the suspects crashed and abandoned their vehicle while fleeing, which has since been seized as evidence.

Leeroy was initially taken to Talwandi Sabo Civil Hospital but was later transferred to AIIMS Bathinda due to the severity of his injuries.
