After chopper crash, Mnangagwa cancels New York trip for UN general assembly

HARARE: President Emmerson Mnangagwa will not be making the annual trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), his office has confirmed.

The developed comes amid heightened speculation after the as yet unexplained crashing of Mnangagwa’s presidential helicopter last weekend.

In a statement Friday, the presidential communications department attributed the decision to what was described as a “dense programme in the last quarter of 2024” for the Zanu PF leader.

The UNGA meetings start next week with the first day of the high-level General Debate being Tuesday, 24 September 2024, continuing through Saturday, 28 September, and concluding on Monday, 30 September 2024.

Presidential spokesperson George Charamba said Zimbabwe would now be represented in the meetings by foreign affairs minister Frederick Shava.
