HARARE: The new Zimbabwean Criminal Law Codification and Reform Amendment Bill signed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, is unconstitutional and malicious according to spokesperson for the Citizens Coalition for Change party, advocate Fadzayi Mahere.

The bill imposes penalties on citizens who portray a negative image of Zimbabwe.

Mahere says dictatorship and abuse have worsened in the country under Mnangagwa’s leadership.

Zimbabwe is set to head to the polls next month.

Mahere said, “this is the latest act of tyranny on the part of Mnangagwa who continues to clampdown on political freedom and we’ve consistently said that his regime is worse than Robert Mugabe and they’ve turned Zimbabwe into a full blown dictatorship.”

“coming to this new piece of legislation…it criminalises willfully damaging the sovereignty or national interest in Zimbabwe.”

“The potential for abuse is so obvious and so open.”
