Scotland look set to win an international tug of war for Wolves kid Ethan Sutherland….after he was called up for Tony Docherty’s Under 21s and Zimbabwe Under 23s in the same week.

The former St Mirren youngster joined Wolves two years ago and is currently on loan at English League Two side Exeter City.

He signed a new long-term deal at the English Championship side at the start of the season.

Sutherland is eligible to play for both countries because he has a Scottish father and Zimbabwean mother and has already represented Scotland Under 19s and was previously called up for Scotland Under 21s last year.

Zimbabwe included him in their squad for their Under 23s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Mali this week before Docherty named him in his squad.

However, it’s believed Sutherland will choose to play for Scotland and will travel to Spain for the double-header of friendlies against Ukraine and the USA.

Zimbabwe Under 23s manager, Marc Sanchez, said: “We have been in touch with the players during the past few weeks. We will start preparing with them when everyone is here.”

Zimbabwe FA claimed in April this year, 20-year-old Sutherland had agreed to play for them, but he has yet to feature.

Their sports director, Marshall Gore, said then: “We are delighted to share that Wolves winger Ethan Sutherland has officially committed to playing for Zimbabwe.

“He has started his Zimbabwean passport application process at the Zimbabwe Embassy in the UK and Ethan and his mother met our ambassador.”

However, the exciting prospect is understood to have opted to play for Scotland.

Scotland did miss out this week though when Docherty revealed this week that Dundee United starlet Daniel Bennie turned down an approach to play for Scotland Under 21s in favour of Australia because they have an Olympic Games tournament approaching.
